XNA and Academia: Partnership & Innovation Through Gaming in Academia
Beyond being fun to play, video games provide an ideal medium for educating the very youths who enjoy them. Technologies which drive video games can be harnessed to provide innovative, new formats for education. Subjects such as networking, AI, graphics, physics, mathematics, artwork, design and more can be taught in new, compelling ways when armed with the right tools, technology and classroom resources. Microsoft has been providing many of these resources for years through various programs and now looks to do the same for faculty interested in teaching using video game technologies. The XNA Academic Program is a brand new program focused on satisfying the growing needs in academia for game development related resources to be leveraged in the classroom and labs. By utilizing XNA GSE and the Xbox 360 students can gain real world applicable game development experience while learning fundamental computer science techniques. The talk outlines the important of a strong partnership with academia and how current trends in casual and community experiences may be driven by innovation within the academic arena.

Another Way? Modern Apprenticeships for the Games Industry
Since 2000, the games industry has concentrated on hiring new entrants with graduate or postgraduate qualifications - over 85% of people entering the games industry in the last seven years have held a higher education qualification. What does this mean for the games industry? Are there other ways for talented individuals to find their way to a career in games without having to take on the commitment in time, and increasingly money, that a degree programme requires.
Skillset has been working towards the creation of a Modern Apprenticeship for the games industry which aims to enable people to enter the industry as a trainee, and work within a games company whilst gaining skills, knowledge and a qualification which will benefit them in their future careers.
In this session Chris Chilton, Skillset's Computer Games Manager will be joined by Sam Watts from NCSoft and Mark Greco from City College Brighton to talk about the first year pilot of this initiative, how it can benefit the industry and how other companies and education institutions can benefit from it in future years.
